The 'Barbaric' Dog Collar Warning

Dog collars are essential for pet owners to keep their animals safe. But the RSPCA have recently issued a warning about a new breed of dog collars.

Dog collars are an essential pet accessory. A dog collar can help identify a lost dog. And of course, dog collars are necessary to safely walk your pet. But when it comes to walking and training dogs, it's important you buy a proper dog collar and avoid collars that offer to 'control' your pets.

Dog Collars That Use Pain

A recent news report highlighted a new trend of barbaric dog collars. The story first emerged in Nottingham, where the RSPCA spoke out - warning dog owners not to buy dog collars designed to control their pets using pain. Animal trainers have condemned the collars that work by pronging and pinching the pet as a way to keep them in check.

Horrific Dog Collars - Inverted Spikes

The inhumane dog collars in question have spikes on the inside of the collar. These spikes dig into the dog's neck if they pull on the lead. But rather than training the dog to be obedient, dog trainers say the collar can in fact trigger aggression. If the dog pulls on its lead every time a person passes by, only to experience pain from the spiked dog collar, the dog can then associate people with pain – triggering an aggressive response from the pet when approached.

Barbaric Dog Collars Create Aggressive Pets

The RSPCA and dog trainers have condemned the dog collars for being cruel. At one dog show, a judge said she feared for her well being when a German Shepherd puppy wearing one of the spiked pinch dog collars lurched at her aggressively. These dog collars are not yet illegal, but some trainers have called for them to be recalled from sale. A spokesperson for the RSPCA said about the dog collars: “We do not advocate any training of dogs by using punishment methods like prong collars. Studies show they can lead to behavioural problems, and cause a long-term threat to the animal's welfare.” Such dog collars can leave dogs scared or aggressive for life – the only way to get an obedient pet is to undergo proper training, with care and respect for the animal.
